Job Description:
2025-26 School Year 175 days/year 8 hours/day Purpose Statement:
The job of Library Clerk is established for the purpose/s of
assisting the library media specialist with instructional and
non-instructional activities for students, staff, and parents.
Responsibilities include overseeing circulation systems and
assisting with the overall operation of the library. This job
reports to Building Principal Essential Functions Assists students,
staff, and parents with a variety of activities (e.g. instructs
students in library operations and materials, locates requested
materials, places holds on requested items, etc.) for the purpose
of providing services to library patrons. Confers with Library
Media Specialist for the purpose of implementing Library Department
goals and ensuring the effective and efficient operation of the
library. Coordinates interlibrary loans (ILLs) (e.g. responds to
Destiny or e-mailed requests from teachers and Library Specialists
throughout the District, keeps good records of requests, delivers
ILL materials to staff, etc.) for the purpose of providing support
and materials for District staff. Maintains the physical appearance
of the library, display cases, and assigned areas (e.g. shelves
books, straightens shelves as needed, sets out books, exchange
newspapers, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring a safe, neat, and
well-organized library environment. Maintains a variety of
documents, files, and records (e.g. quarterly statistics reports;
up-to-date student and staff Destiny profiles; student and staff
overdue lists; data needed for reports; record of
library/conference room and equipment usage by non-library staff;
classroom check-out reports, weekly media center schedule,
collection statistics, renewal information, overdue lists, bank
deposits, requested bibliographies, etc.) for the purpose of
documenting activities and providing up-to-date, accurate
information. Monitors student activities (e.g. assures students are
signed in and out, assists with printer issues, assists in locating
books, supervises before and after-school walk-in students, etc.)
for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment conducive to
learning. Oversees equipment usage (e.g. schedules all equipment,
replies to equipment requests, resolves scheduling conflicts,
creates technology tickets for unresolved issues, etc.) for the
purpose of providing equipment in an efficient and effective
manner. Participates in team meetings as requested (e.g. in-service
training, workshops, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or
gathering information and supporting District goals. Performs
initial trouble shooting on student instructional devices (e.g.
battery reset, device wipe, resetting frozen screens, etc.) for the
purpose of ensuring and efficient, effective, and supportive
learning environment. Performs a variety of administrative tasks
(e.g. answers telephone, takes and delivers messages, updates and
creates documents, conducts library inventory, copies and scans
items, reconciles inventory reports, operates a variety of office
equipment, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the effective and
efficient functioning of the library. Performs library and student
instructional device circulation activities (e.g. turns on/off OPAC
and self checkout computers; checks-in and checks-out
materials/devices; prepares circulation count, lists of overdue
items, collects payment for lost or damaged library materials;
assists clients in locating materials; maintains student device
cart, communicates with building technology staff, etc.) for the
purpose of controlling the use, location and availability of items.
Prepares items for deselection (e.g. compiles list of barcodes,
informs staff of eliminated items, removes any District identifying
marks, offers deselected items to building staff, sends remaining
items to the warehouse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a high
quality collection. Processes library books, periodicals, and
related media materials (e.g. enters into Destiny files; stamps
with school stamp, barcodes, assign genres, puts on spine labels
and mylar covers; laminates paperback books; shelves materials;
dates magazines; labels award nominee books and special collection
books, etc.) for the purpose of providing students and staff with
with a wide-variety of materials. Repairs and cleans books and
materials for the purpose of ensuring the availability of a high
quality library inventory. Responds to inquiries of students,
staff, and parents (e.g. availability of books, status of overdue
materials, use of Destiny automation system, etc.) for the purpose
of providing information and/or direction as required. Schedules,
trains, and supervises student and adult library volunteers for the
purpose of ensuring library procedures and policies are maintained
by volunteer assistants. Supports a wide variety of building
functions when requested by principal (e.g. hall duty, lunch
supervision, bus duty, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the
effective and efficient operation of the school building. Supports
a variety of library programs and events (e.g. book fairs, learning
lunches, author visits, book clubs, other library clubs or groups,
etc.) for the purpose of enhancing the activities provided through
the library. Other Functions Performs other related duties for the
purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the
work unit. Job Requirements: Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
(Minimum Qualifications) SKILLS are required to perform multiple
tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet
changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required
to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:
operating standard office equipment including using pertinent
software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records;
and customer service. KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math,
including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios;
read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed
formats, and/or present information to others; and understand
complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific
knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the
functions of the job include: library practices; and computer and
Internet operations. ABILITY is required to schedule activities,
meetings, and/or events; gather and/or collate data; and use
job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others
in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing
defined but different processes; and operate equipment using
standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide
diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and
utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is
required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem
solving with data may require independent interpretation; and
problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific
ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the
functions of the job include: Establishing effective working
relationships; adaptability/flexibility; dealing with frequent
interruptions; detail oriented; reliability; and good communication
skills. Responsibility Responsibilities include: working under
direct supervision using standardized routines; leading, guiding,
and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget.
Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required
to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to affect
the organization’s services. Work Environment The usual and
customary methods of performing the job's functions require the
following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing,
and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping,
kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger
dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 30% walking, 50%
standing. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to
risk of injury and/or illness and in a clean atmosphere.
Experience: Job related experience is desired. Education: High
