It is a fast-paced medical-surgical acuity unit specializing in orthopedic injuries, neurological conditions, including strokes and head injuries, as well as trauma cases. Staff commonly use iPhones to access a mobile communication program that enhances teamwork while ensuring patient privacy. The unit benefits from streamlined communication tools allowing for direct messaging among team members across various specialties such as physical therapy and radiology. This unit operates within a busy Level 2 trauma center, resulting in a high patient volume. The recent expansion of the unit reflects its growing demand and commitment to quality patient care. Staffing includes a charge nurse and multiple registered nurses per shift, maintaining a patient ratio of 5-6:1. Wound care and dressing changes are typical procedures performed on the unit. The dress code requires staff to wear royal blue scrubs. The unit promotes an engaging work environment; first-year RN turnover is exceptionally low, and employee engagement is steadily increasing each year. A rotating weekend schedule is employed, requiring staff to work every third weekend or more frequently if necessary.
