of Pediatrics has designated Children’s Mercy as a Level IV NICU.
This is the highest designation available and means babies have
access to a full range of more than 400 newborn medicine
specialists, highly-trained pediatric nurses and anesthesiologists,
and specialized equipment for our tiniest patients. Children’s
Mercy is the only hospital between St. Louis and Denver that can
provide this level of care. Every day, we care for more than 80
fragile newborns who are very small, sick, or need surgery have the

Every type of pediatric subspecialist (doctors who treat a certain
system, like baby’s heart, lungs or kidneys) is available on-site.
Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurses provide advanced illness
management and health promotion for patients who require critical
care. Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurses utilize the nursing
process and knowledge of scientific principles to provide safe,
high quality, comprehensive, family-centered and age appropriate
nursing care for patients requiring critical care management.
Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurses continuously monitor the
critically patient and react to changes in clinical status.
Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurses provide patient and family
education, advocate for the complex needs of the critically ill
child and coordinate patient care with the multidisciplinary team

nursing process to develop and implement a safe, high quality,
comprehensive, and age-appropriate plan of care for the critically
ill patient and family that promotes optimal patient outcomes. -
Meets the educational and informational needs of the critically ill
patient and family and advocates for their needs. - Maintains an
environment that is safe, comfortable, efficient, and family
centered. - Utilizes current research and evidence for practice to
expand personal professional knowledge, enhance role performance,
and improve nursing care quality for critically ill patients.
Qualifications: - Two years of Level III NICU or 1 year of Level IV
NICU experience preferred - Associate's Degree required -
Bachelor's Degree preferred - Licensed RN - MO, Registered Nurse
Multistate License Missouri required upon hire - Licensed RN -
Kansas, Registered Nurse Multistate License Kansas required upon
hire - RN Compact license for all states besides KS and MO - Refer
to Nursing and Advanced Practice Provider Licensure and
Certification policy for required Life Support Certifications
Required Upon Hire - Specialty Certification relevant to unit’s
patient population (determined by Nurse Manager/Director) Preferred
